A Special Birthday Tradition and Evelyn's Big Birthday Gift

After Evelyn's theater performance, Doug's parents came back to the house with us. They had birthday gifts for the kids and a special surprise as well.

My mother in law made and decorated a lot of cakes when her four kids were young. She had a bear cake mold and used that often. This year she made each of the kids their own bear cake. They were quite pleased and excited about that!!

Thanks, Grandma!

So, for Evelyn's birthday this year, she wanted a "new" room. The decor in her room had been there for six years and she very politely asked for a change. We agreed, and had such a great time picking paint and bedding, etc. Doug decided to take it a step further and have her involved in the financial part of it as well. We gave her a budget that she needed to keep track of. She took the job very seriously and it was a good lesson in both math and in how much things cost! One of the things we encouraged her to do was have people help her stay on budget buy buying things for her new room as birthday gifts. She is a bit shy and introverted but took on the challenge. My mom got her a rug and a lamp, and she asked her Grandma Morris is she would make her curtains for her new room. Tonight she got the curtains... one of the final touches on her room!

Doug and his dad trying to hang up said curtains. Mom M and I took over soon after this shot was taken! :)

Evelyn really is into Audrey Hepburn. This is a print I made for her room.. I love it!

She LOVES her new room!!
